Let's walk through the steps of a breast self examination:

Step one: Choose a time to do your self examination, preferably when your breasts are not swollen or tender. This could be a few days after your period ends.

Step two: Stand in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides. Look for any changes in the size, shape, or color of your breasts. Also, check for any dimpling or puckering of the skin, or changes in the position of your nipples.

Step three: Raise your arms above your head and look for the same changes.

Step four: Place your hands on your hips and press down firmly to tighten your chest muscles. Again, look for any changes in your breasts.

Step five: Lie down on your bed with a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Use the pads of your three middle fingers on your left hand to examine your right breast. Use small circular motions and varying pressure levels to feel for any lumps or irregularities. Be sure to cover the entire breast, from the collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from the armpit to the cleavage.

Step six: Repeat the same process for your left breast, using your right hand.

Step seven: Finally, check for any discharge from your nipples by gently squeezing them. If you notice any discharge, be sure to consult with your doctor.

It's important to remember that most breast lumps are not cancerous. However, if you do feel a lump or notice any changes in your breasts, don't panic. Make an appointment with your doctor to get it checked out. The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the chances of successful treatment.
