In India, two main vaccines are available to prevent cervical cancer: Gardasil 9 and Cervarix. Both vaccines target high-risk strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a major cause of cervical cancer.

1. Gardasil 9:
- Manufacturer:Gardasil 9 is manufactured by Merck & Co.
- Targeted Strains:It protects against nine high-risk HPV strains, including HPV 16 and 18 (responsible for most cervical cancers) and also HPV 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58.
- Dosage:The vaccine is administered in a series of three doses. The second dose is usually given 2 months after the first, and the third dose is administered 6 months after the initial dose.
- Age Group: Gardasil 9 is recommended for both males and females, ideally before the onset of sexual activity. The vaccination can be given to individuals from the age of 9 to 26.

2. Cervarix:
- Manufacturer:Cervarix is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).
- Targeted Strains: It primarily targets HPV 16 and 18, the two most common high-risk strains associated with cervical cancer.
- Dosage: Cervarix is administered in a series of three doses. The second dose is typically given about a month after the first, and the third dose is administered six months after the initial dose.
- Age Group: Cervarix is recommended for females and is usually administered between the ages of 9 and 25.

Both vaccines work by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the targeted HPV strains. It's important to note that these vaccines do not treat existing HPV infections or cervical cancer; they are preventive measures.

The vaccination regimens are designed to ensure long-term protection against HPV, reducing the risk of cervical cancer. It's crucial for individuals to consult with healthcare professionals to determine the most suitable vaccine and schedule for their specific situation. Additionally, regular cervical cancer screenings, such as Pap smears, remain important for early detection and effective management.
