Break-through study finds drug that slows growth of breast cancer cells in the lungs.

Scientists have identified why breast cancer cells that spread to the lungs can remain dormant for years and then cause incurable tumors.
Researchers from the Institute of Cancer Research in London discovered that a protein called PDGF-C triggers the growth of secondary tumors.

The study on mice also showed that an existing cancer drug, Imatinib, can reduce the growth of these tumors. The findings could help develop more specific treatments for this type of cancer. Every year, over 44,000 women in the UK and 210,000 in the US are diagnosed with the most common type of breast cancer.
