As our bodies age, our skin becomes thinner, and this thinning of the skin makes veins more visible. Spider veins and blood vessels can develop on anyone’s face regardless of age or gender but some people have a higher risk than others. These include:

• Genetics. People with a family history of spider veins are more likely to have them.
• Gender. Women are more commonly affected, but many men also experience these problem veins, especially those with a family history.
• Rosacea. This common skin condition leads to excessive redness and flushing. With rosacea, broken blood vessels are common.
• Sun exposure. Excessive sun exposure can enlarge your blood vessels. If you get a sunburn, the top layer of skin may peel and temporarily make some of the blood vessels in your face more noticeable.
• Alcohol consumption. Moderate or occasional alcohol consumption can cause your skin to flush due to the enlargement of blood vessels. Binge drinking and heavy alcohol use can eventually lead to spider veins.
• Trauma. Minor to significant injuries can lead to bruising. With bruises on your face, broken blood vessels may also be noticeable.
• Vomiting or sneezing. Sudden, extreme pressure in your face from a violent sneeze or a vomiting spell can break the blood vessels in the skin.
• Weather changes. Hot weather increases blood vessel dilation
• Environmental or chemical irritants.

Spider veins in middle-aged men are very common and easy to treat with great results using the leading edge laser technology called Stellar M22™ or intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy. IPL reduces the appearance and heals spider veins including the surrounding tissues to prevent further damage.

Treating Spider Veins With Stellar M22™ IPL Therapy in Men

The Stellar M22™ or intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments enable Dr. Monique S. Cohn to effectively treat spider veins, reticular veins (blue veins), broken capilaries and rosacea. This unique technology enables optimal tailoring of the light source and energy to effectively target the vascular condition and cause it to fade away.

Is It right for me?

Stellar M22™ treatments are not suitable for everyone and may carry some risks. Stellar M22™ vascular treatments are not suitable when you have active infections, viral, fungal or bacterial diseases, inflammatory skin conditions or skin cancer. Risks may include: redness, swelling, change of pigmentation and scarring. Be sure to consult with your treatment provider before choosing this treatment.

What to expect during treatments and how does it work?

In many cases, improvement is seen immediately after treatment – full clearance of the veins might take several weeks as they slowly fade away. In the case of multiple veins, 2-3 sessions in 6-8 weeks intervals may be needed.

What can I expect after treatment?

Immediately following treatment, darkening of the vessels will be apparent, with slight redness and swelling along the vessel. You should avoid hot baths and excessive physical exercise for 1-2 weeks following your treatment. However, you should be able to continue with your normal activities immediately.

Vascular Technology

The laser or IPL create heat inside the blood vessels, which closes the vein’s walls, eventually causing the vein to disappear. The laser is very precise and only impacts the selected blood vessel and none of the surrounding skin. The IPL filter also targets the blood only and none of the surrounding skin. Both Lumenis technologies enable cooling of your skin between pulses, which reduces the chance of skin damage, producing great results.

The Treatment

Just before treatment, your physician will apply a thin layer of clear gel onto the treatment area. During treatment, your physician will treat the targeted veins by applying a few pulses on each blood vessel source. The treatment will take between 10-20 minutes, depending on the number of blood vessels being treated. During the treatment you may experience a stinging or burning sensation, but it is tolerable.

Spider veins on the face pose no harm, but as stated above they can be a sign of an underlying condition like Rosacea. Call 330-425-7600 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Monique S. Cohn, DO FAOCD at Advanced Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center to discuss if IPL is the right treatment option for you.
