Following up from part 1, our patient presented to Dr. Agha for breast reconstruction after mastectomy. His ongoing experience in reconstruction enables Dr. Agha to be at the forefront of aesthetic breast procedures for both cosmetic and reconstructive cases. Breast surgery encompasses many different procedures, as Dr. Agha explains, surgical reconstruction of the breast seeks to rebuild, reshape and improve the look and feel of the breasts following a mastectomy. To surgically replace a breast a silicone or saline implant may be used or a new breast mound will be constructed using tissue from the patient’s own body. The surgical procedure chosen depends on the patient’s body type and condition, the patient’s age, and the kind of treatment being used for the trauma or disease.

Our patient today had a silicone implant placed after removing a tissue expander. Dr. Agha uses surgical scaffolds aka mesh to stabilize and support weakened or compromised tissue. Dr. Agha inserts a GalaFlex mesh under the skin to support the breast mass. The piece of mesh is then sutured to the chest cavity and to the breast mass below the nipple, allowing it to act as a kind of hammock that cradles and supports the lifted breast mass.
